Kell PTSA Reflections
The Kell PTSA Reflections program is a great way to express yourself and show others your talents in photography, visual arts, literature, film production, musical composition or dance choreography. The 2009-2010 theme is “Beauty is…”. Think about what the theme means to you and create an original piece of artwork in one or more of the six categories. To get the rules and to download an official entry form, please visit www.pta.org/2033.htm.  The entry deadline is Friday, October 9th and entries should be dropped off in the front office in the Reflections box. All entries receive a certificate of participation and winners are eligible for additional prizes. Please contact georgina323@hotmail.com or vm1273@aol.com with any questions. Good Luck!

Special PTSA Program
If you have a teenager in your life, you have probably done your share of worrying about the potential risks they encounter daily.  Risk dealing with alcohol, tobacco, illicit drug use, dangerous driving, sexual activity and pressures at school, sports and friends. Teens are facing a host of intense challenges and changes in their lives, and they think they alone can handle them.  When in reality, they need parents to help guide and navigate them through these pre-teen years on into young adulthood.

The Kell PTSA will be hosting a program entitled “Our Teens’ Toxic Culture” on Tuesday, September 29th starting @ 7PM presented by Pat Giuliani.

The middle school and high school years are filled with times that our kids make life-altering decisions: whether to drink, take driving risks, have sex, smoke and even today’s latest challenges regarding what they see, do and say online.  Parenting is not a popularity contest.  Learn what parents need to understand about our kids’ lives and how to be a safe haven – with rules and standards – in the midst of their chaos.

Pat Giuliani, has lived in Cobb County for 30 years. She is married and has 4 daughters.
Pat is employed by the Cobb Alcohol Taskforce serving as the coordinator of “Cobb Safe Neighborhoods/Safe Homes”.  She is also employed by the Council on Alcohol and Drugs and sits on the Parent Advisory Panel for The Partnership of Drug Free America. She is the editor of The Parent Corps newsletter which goes out monthly to schools in Georgia and other states educating them on the effect drugs, alcohol and tobacco has on the teen brain.

SCHOOL NEWS

Senior Tea
The Counseling Department will be hosting a Senior tea during the week of
September 21st through 25th. Parents of seniors are welcome to attend and receive information on the college admissions process. Counselors will also provide an opportunity for parents to ask questions.

Community Service
Kell High School will be launching a new initiative that will encourage all students to engage in community service. Earning community service hours is a great opportunity to build a strong profile for college admissions. It can also make students eligible for community service based scholarships. There are a couple of volunteer opportunities at Blackwell Elementary in the near future. Please have your student see Ms. David in the Counseling Office for more information.
Cell Phone/iPod/Electronic Devices
The use of cell phones/iPods/electronic devices is not permitted during the school hours of 8:20 – 3:25.  We our asking for your help as the teachers and administrators try to ensure the learning environment is distraction free. We have asked the students not to use these devices but unfortunately we are still having a problem. Administration will be forced to take different measures to change this behavior, which may result in devices being taken up for the day, if they are being used during school hours. Our hope is to have you speak to your student about following the school policy and making them aware of this expectation so we do not have to enforce such a consequence.
